South Building Modernization Phase 4a - Abatement Activities

Grunley Construction Company, Inc., under contract with the Office of Operations, Facilities Management Division Engineering Branch, performed asbestos-containing material (ACM) and lead-based paint (LBP) abatement activities as part of their construction of the Wing 5. During this project, ACM and LBP was removed from pipe and equipment insulation, floor tiles and mastic, wallboards, roofing material and various structural elements. The work took place on all floors of Wing 5 of the South Building.

All abatement work was conducted in strict accordance with all applicable District of Columbia and Federal safety, health, and environmental regulations. This included:

• Appropriate and adequate containment of the work areas,
• Proper consolidation and packaging of hazardous materials prior to transport out of the containment areas, and
• All environmental monitoring required by law to protect both abatement workers and building occupants.
