AGlossary
Alternative
Work Arrangements are flexible work schedules and options
that allow employees to balance their work, family, and life responsibilities
by determining his or her own schedule within the tour of duty
limits set by the agency.
Credit
Hours are extra time worked in excess of the basic work requirement
which the employee elects to work. A full-time employee may accumulate
and carry up to 24 credit hours from pay period to pay period.
Credit hours may be earned only by Maxi flex employees. Part-time
employees earn credit hours on a prorated basis.
Career
part-time Employment is permanent employment in which the
employee has a career or career-conditional appointment, is eligible
for fringe benefits, and works between 16 and 32 hours each week
on a prearranged schedule.
Employee
Assistance Program provides occupational health services to
promote and maintain the physical and mental fitness of employees.
This is a service that is available to all USDA employees.
Family
Member refers to any individual related by blood or affinity
whose close association with an employee is equivalent to a family
relationship.
Flexiplace,
also known as flexible workplace or telecommuting, refers to paid
employment performed away from the office, either at home or at
a satellite worksite, for an agreed-upon portion of the workweek.
Job Sharing
is a form of part-time employment in which the schedules of two
or more part-time employees are arranged to cover the duties of
a single full-time position. Each job sharer may work a portion
of the day or week.
Satellite
Work Center is an alternative workplace for employees who
commute long distances to offices typically located in downtown
metropolitan areas. Centers augment the work-at-home option (flexiplace).
Centers have 10 to 20 computer work stations, fax machines, and
video conference capabilities.
