Agreement States

This link is provided as a way to contact the radiation safety agencies in the Agreement States. An Agreement State may be contacted,

  • to notify them of an accident or unusual event at a USDA site in their state
  • to request assistance in the event of a radiological emergency at a USDA site in their state
  • for any other unspecified reason.

Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors is an organization among Agreement States that seeks uniformity among state regulations, especially regarding the regulation of x-ray producing equipment.

Explanation

The NRC has an Agreement State program in which some states, called Agreement States, have entered into agreements with the NRC that give them the authority to regulate radioactive material within their borders. In the special situation of Federally-controlled sites in Agreement States, the NRC maintains jurisdiction. Therefore, USDA, which is regulated by the NRC, has locations in most Agreement States, which are not under state regulation. Although Agreement States do not have any legal control or authority over USDA sites, it is important to maintain good and cooperative relations with them so that USDA and Agreement States can work together, when necessary.
